New Year's Eve
after all the activity of the last week, we spent a beautiful day comfortably unwinding. waking up late, we went looking for lunch and planned to see the Lord of the Rings/Two Towers at a matinee. we meant to catch the free hilo hattie bus to ala moana, but after running to catch it, we realized it was the JTB charter bus. anyway, we followed a group of japanese tourists on, and proceeded to diamondhead(!) in the other direction. sometimes little detours are so delicious. after a loop to the eastern end of the island, and an hour later, we finally had a quick lunch at ala moana, and caught the 2:15 show. this time i only fell asleep for a few minutes in the middle. haha!
in the evening, we went to my uncle's house for another dinner and i went looking for old pictures. i love how old pictures can take you to another time and place. so it was quite fitting to have a healthy dose of nostalgia for new year's eve.
after getting back, we went for a walk on kalakaua and watched a few street performers. then we met my parents at the Halekulani for drinks, the honolulu symphony, and the fireworks (which we missed, but had caught from our hotel). afterwards a smaller group played big band tunes, and we enjoyed the new year with the comfort of the midnight breeze, the sound of the ocean surf and the big band, and the good company of family.
